Adams Oshiomhole Questions Effectiveness of FRSC and NSCDC in Nigeria

According to DAILY POST, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing the Edo North senatorial district, has publicly opposed the establishment of the proposed Nigerian Coast Guard, which is intended to safeguard Nigeria’s maritime areas.

Speaking during a plenary session on Tuesday, Oshiomhole articulated his belief that the Nigerian Navy is already effectively fulfilling this role.

Oshiomhole's stance is rooted in a broader critique of the establishment of new security agencies, referencing the creation of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

He argued that these agencies have not proven to be necessary, raising concerns about their efficiency and overhead costs.

“This is how we created the National Road Safety Commission with a huge overhead,” Oshiomhole stated.

He pointed out that in the past, traffic management was handled by the Nigeria Police's traffic division, which he believes was more effective than the current FRSC.

“When I was growing up that job was being done by the traffic division of the Nigeria Police and they were more efficient than it is today.”

The senator further questioned the effectiveness of the FRSC, stating, “Those of you who travel on the road, I don’t know if you see the Road Safety Commission helpful but they were created.”

Oshiomhole also addressed the NSCDC, which was established to protect pipelines and government properties.

He expressed skepticism about whether these properties are indeed safer now than before the agency's creation.

“Right now, I don’t know whether the properties are safer or not,” he remarked.

In his closing remarks, Oshiomhole urged that decisions regarding the establishment of new security institutions should involve the National Security Adviser and the executive branch, as they are better positioned to assess the need for additional agencies.

“Issues like this should be referred to the National Security Adviser, the executives. They alone can tell us whether or not another institution is needed but for now, I think our mandate should be trying to strengthen the Navy,” he stated.
